Good Handwriting Tips

Six things that decide whether writing is readable

Our teams of handwriting experts, in their research and during training, have identified more than 56+ types of errors that people make while writing. These six tips fix the ones we see most often.

Find the Style of Your Handwriting

There are various styles of writing like print, italics, cursive, etc., but the thing is the consistency in one’s handwriting. It means if one writes in cursive, one should maintain continuity. It should not blend two or more different styles while writing. Maintaining the sanctity of the style (you have chosen to use) your legibility increases, which also portrays a positive impression on the reader.

Maintain Uniform Size & Shape

Every letter has a size and definite shape; you must maintain this for proper readability. Delivering the correct message, i.e., reducing the chances of misreading your message becomes possible when the letters are framed in their actual zones (upper, middle, and lower) without distortion. Whenever you write or create a letter, make sure it is read as you want it to be.

Keep Your Slants Uniform

Some people have slants in their handwriting. These can be either on the left side or right side. Extreme slants on the left cause overlapping, while those in the right slant leave no or less space for the following letter to be written. Extremes of both sides of slants affect the readability of the words or sentences. Either left or right, all slants are correct. But, avoid extremes and maintain a consistent angle of slants.

Spacing Between Letters & Words

Inadequate spacing can make writing clumsy. Letters tend to overlap if squeezed in. The overlapping results into the letters losing their individuality. The word may become illegible or may be misread resulting into miscommunication. The spacing should always be optimum between the letters and words by ensuring that the individuality of every letter is maintained.

Correct Your Letter Formation

The legibility of any handwriting depends a lot on the correct formation of the letters. Whether print or cursive writing, each letter should be readable as a part of the word and individually. The prescribed shape of the letters must be followed to avoid them from being misread. Need be revisit the basics learnt during primary school and get the formation corrected.

Maintain Speed & Legibility

Write with confidence when you write with speed. This is particularly important for students when they take down notes in class. A conscious effort of maintaining legibility with speed will ensure that your handwriting never becomes a cause for loss of marks in exams. Moreover this also helps you in delivering quality content every time you write.

Analyse your own handwriting against these six points — uniformity in the shape and size of letters, the slant, the spacing between letters and words. You will be able to identify exactly what needs correcting, and fixing those few things alone will lift the legibility of everything you write.
Myths & Facts

Eight beliefs that stop handwriting from ever being fixed

Most people do not fail to fix their handwriting because it is hard. They never start, because of one of these.

Myth 01

“Bad handwriting runs in our family.”

Fact

Handwriting is not inherited — it is copied. Children imitate the grip and writing style they see at home, which makes it look hereditary. The real causes are learned: wrong pencil grip, slouched posture, incorrect stroke direction and untrained letter formation. All four are correctable in a week.

Myth 02

“After 10, it’s too late to fix handwriting.”

Fact

Motor learning never shuts down. Teenagers, college students, UPSC aspirants and working adults retrain their handwriting successfully every day. Write Right's classes are open to anyone aged 9 and above, with no upper age limit — the same 7-day structure works for school children and adults alike.

Myth 03

“Left-handed kids will always write messily.”

Fact

Left-handers write differently, not worse. They need the page tilted the opposite way, a grip held slightly higher so the hand doesn’t smudge and hide the words, and the light coming from the right. Make those three adjustments and legibility matches any right-hander.

Myth 04

“Messy handwriting means a genius brain.”

Fact

There is no link between messy writing and intelligence. The myth survives on the “doctors’ handwriting” stereotype. What messy writing actually signals is a hand writing faster than its training allows — the mind races ahead, the untrained hand collapses. Train the hand and the speed stays while the mess goes.

Myth 05

“Examiners don’t cut marks for handwriting.”

Fact

They don’t deduct — they simply can’t award. No board publishes a “handwriting penalty”. But an examiner marking hundreds of scripts cannot award a mark for a word they cannot read. The mark isn’t taken away; it is never given in the first place.

Myth 06

“Neat writing = slow writing. She won’t finish the paper.”

Fact

Trained handwriting is usually faster. Speed is lost to hesitation, re-tracing and over-correction — all symptoms of unautomatic letter formation. Once formation becomes automatic, the hand stops stalling. For students who still need more speed, there is a dedicated Speed Writing course.

Myth 07

“Just make him write 10 pages a day.”

Fact

Practice without correction hardwires the mistake. If a child forms “a” with the wrong stroke direction, ten pages makes that wrong stroke more automatic, not less. Correction must come first. Practice then locks in the corrected pattern — which is exactly why Write Right sets no homework.

Myth 08

“He’ll grow out of it on his own.”

Fact

Habits don’t dissolve with age — they set. Every year of uncorrected writing makes the wrong pattern more automatic and adds another year of marks quietly lost. Children don’t grow out of bad handwriting; they grow into it.
