What is Jump to Cursive?
A style switch, not a repair job
Jump to Cursive is Write Right India's dedicated 7-day cursive writing programme. Over seven one-hour supervised sessions, a trainer takes a learner from printed letters to a joined, slanted, rhythmic cursive hand using stroke-sequenced drills and a personalised workbook.
It is built for a specific learner: someone whose writing is already readable, who now wants cursive as their permanent everyday writing style — faster, more consistent, and better looking under exam pressure.
Seven days, in their own hand
Handwriting is judged with the eyes, not with adjectives. Every sample below is a real Day 1 and Day 7 worksheet from a Write Right learner.
Jump to Cursive — the complete 7-day cursive writing course, one hour a day, with a personalised workbook. Your centre confirms batch timings during the free handwriting assessment.
Why switch to cursive at all?
Key benefits
Fewer pen lifts, more speed
Cursive lifts the pen roughly once per word instead of once per letter. Less stopping means faster writing — the reason cursive out-paces print once the movement is learnt.
Continuous flow, fewer reversals
Because letters connect in one direction, cursive naturally reduces the b/d and p/q reversals that trip up many young writers in print.
A consistent, mature hand
Uniform slant, loop height and spacing make a page look composed. Examiners read a consistent hand faster — and reading speed is quietly linked to how generously an answer is marked.
Holds shape under pressure
Rushed print collapses into a scrawl. Trained cursive degrades far more gracefully, because the movement is a single practised rhythm rather than twenty-six separate ones.
Fine-motor and coordination gains
Joined writing trains sustained left-to-right hand control and finger-eye coordination — the same motor foundations that support drawing, geometry and instrument play.
A signature for life
Cursive is the foundation of a legible adult signature and a professional hand on forms, cheques, notes and cards — a skill that outlasts school by fifty years.
Six things this programme does that a worksheet cannot
Built only for cursive
Join-pattern drills
Every letter pair is grouped by how it connects, so joins are learnt as movements rather than memorised one by one.
Slant consistency
A fixed slant guide trains a single, repeatable angle — the difference between neat cursive and a page that looks windblown.
Loop-height control
Ascenders, x-height and descenders are trained against ruled bands so words sit evenly on the line.
Entry & exit strokes
Where a letter begins and ends decides whether the next join works. Taught explicitly, corrected in real time.
Cursive that survives the classroom
A full day is spent writing at classroom pace, and the final sessions move onto school-style ruled paper with real answer-length sentences — so the new hand holds up in an actual exam, not just on copybook lines.
Personalised workbook
Pages are chosen for the letters that particular learner struggles with — not a printed batch identical for thirty children.
Is cursive actually the programme you need?
Choose correctly
Write Right runs four different programmes. Only one of them is right for your child today — and we would rather send you to the correct one than sell you this one.

Cursive writing FAQs
Common questions
What is the Jump to Cursive programme?
Jump to Cursive is Write Right India's dedicated 7-day cursive writing programme. Over seven one-hour supervised sessions, a learner moves from printed letters to a joined, slanted, rhythmic cursive hand using stroke-sequenced drills and a personalised workbook. It is designed for learners who can already form letters and want cursive as their permanent writing style.
Can cursive writing really be learnt in 7 days?
Yes, because cursive is a motor skill built from only four repeating strokes, not twenty-six separate shapes. When a trainer corrects grip and posture on Day 1 and teaches letters in movement families rather than alphabetical order, the learning curve collapses. Seven supervised hours are enough to establish the movement.
What exactly happens in each of the 7 classes?
Day 1 assessment, grip and posture. Day 2 the four base strokes. Day 3 lower-case letter families. Day 4 joins and rhythm. Day 5 capitals and full words. Day 6 sentences at writing speed. Day 7 final assessment, legibility certification and a retention plan.
How long is each class, and how many days a week?
Each class is one hour. The programme runs across seven sessions, usually on consecutive days, because daily repetition is what makes a motor skill stick. Batch timings are flexible.
What is the right age to start cursive writing?
Our Jump to Cursive course is open to anyone aged 9 and above who can form printed letters reliably and hold a pencil in a tripod grip. There is no upper limit — we regularly train 12-year-olds, teenagers preparing for boards, and adults who want a professional hand and a better signature.
Is the programme available online as well as at centres?
Yes. Jump to Cursive runs at Write Right centres across India and as live, individually supervised online classes. Online learners receive the same printed workbook by courier before Day 1.
What materials does my child receive?
A personalised Jump to Cursive workbook.
Is there any homework?
No. Jump to Cursive has zero homework. All practice happens inside the supervised one-hour class — deliberately, because unsupervised practice repeats mistakes and makes them permanent.
Do you teach cursive in Hindi as well as English?
Write Right trains in both English and Hindi. Jump to Cursive itself is an English cursive programme; joined Devanagari writing is covered within our handwriting improvement programme.
Does my child get a certificate at the end?
Yes. On Day 7 the learner receives a Write Right legibility certificate along with the side-by-side Day 1 and Day 7 writing samples — which most parents find far more meaningful than the certificate itself.
How is Jump to Cursive different from your Handwriting Improvement programme?
Handwriting Improvement fixes writing that is hard to read, in whichever script the learner already uses — print, cursive or Hindi. Jump to Cursive is a style switch: it is for a learner whose writing is already readable and who wants cursive as their permanent hand. If your child's writing is genuinely illegible, start there.
My child's writing is messy — should I choose cursive or handwriting improvement first?
Start with Handwriting Improvement. Cursive layered on top of unstable letter formation produces fast, joined, illegible writing. Once letters are formed correctly and consistently, Jump to Cursive is the natural next step. The free assessment will tell you which one your child needs.
Print vs cursive — which is better for a school student?
Print is easier to learn and easier to read letter by letter. Cursive is faster once learnt, because the pen lifts far less often, and it holds its shape better under exam pressure. For a student who already writes legibly and needs more speed and consistency, cursive is usually the better long-term hand.
How is this different from cursive classes that run for 15 days or several levels?
Level-based courses spread the same content over months and charge per level. Jump to Cursive teaches the complete cursive movement in seven supervised hours by sequencing letters by stroke family rather than alphabetically. One programme, one fee, one week.
Why not just use free cursive worksheets or YouTube videos at home?
Worksheets show the destination but cannot correct the movement. Most self-taught cursive fails on three things a video cannot see: pen grip, paper slant and the direction each stroke is drawn. A trainer watching the hand catches these in minutes — the entire reason this takes a week rather than a year.
Should we do Speed Writing instead if the problem is finishing exams on time?
If the writing is already neat and the only problem is finishing the paper, Speed Writing is the right programme. If the writing also breaks down when your child hurries, cursive is the better fix, because joined writing holds its shape at speed. Many students do Jump to Cursive first and Speed Writing afterwards.
How do you compare with other handwriting institutes in India?
Write Right has trained handwriting since 1998 across English, Hindi and cursive, with individually supervised one-hour classes, no homework, and a personalised workbook. Most alternatives run 14 to 30 day or multi-level courses.
Seven days sounds too good to be true — what is the catch?
There is no catch, but there is a condition: attendance. Seven consecutive supervised hours work because the skill is built daily without gaps. Miss days and the movement does not consolidate. We are also clear about what seven days delivers — a correct, legible, joined cursive hand. Elegance and personal style keep developing for months afterwards.
Will the Handwriting Improvement Last, or Can It Slip Back to the Old Handwriting?
The improvement can last long-term when children consistently follow the handwriting techniques and instructions taught during the programme. With regular practice, these techniques gradually become a natural writing habit, helping children maintain clear, legible handwriting.
However, if children stop following the instructions or return to their old writing habits, their handwriting may gradually become less legible again.
The key to lasting improvement is consistency. We encourage children to apply the techniques they learn at Write Right every time they write, whether at school, at home, or during exams. With consistent practice and the right habits, children can maintain their handwriting improvement over time.
Won't cursive slow my child down during exams?
It is slower for the first two to three weeks while the movement is new, then faster than print — because the pen lifts once per word instead of once per letter. We deliberately train writing speed on Day 6 so the transition period is as short as possible.
Is cursive writing allowed in CBSE and ICSE board exams?
Yes. CBSE and ICSE permit any writing style — cursive, print or a mix. No board awards extra marks for cursive itself, and none penalises it. What decides marks is legibility, because an examiner can only mark what they can read. Well-taught cursive helps because joined writing stays neat at exam speed, while rushed print tends to collapse. Poorly formed cursive is worse than clear print — which is why cursive should be taught properly rather than copied from a worksheet.
My child is 14 — is it too late to switch to cursive?
No. Age is not the barrier — an established habit is, and habits respond to correct, supervised repetition at any age. Teenagers often progress faster than young children because they understand why each correction matters. We also train adults in their thirties, forties and beyond.
What does the programme cost?
Fees vary slightly by centre and by online or in-centre mode; your nearest centre will confirm the exact figure during the free assessment.
My child is left-handed. Can they learn cursive properly?
Yes. Left-handed learners need a different paper angle, a slightly adjusted grip position and modified exit strokes to avoid smudging — all part of our standard training. Left-handedness is not a disadvantage in cursive when the setup is correct.
How do I know whether my child needs this programme?
If your child's writing is readable but inconsistent, slow, or looks childish for their age, and the school has introduced or expects cursive, this programme fits. If teachers cannot read the work at all, begin with Handwriting Improvement instead. The free assessment gives you a straight answer either way.
What happens in the free handwriting assessment?
A trainer has the learner write a short standard passage, then analyses letter formation, grip, posture, slant, spacing and speed. You receive a written summary, a recommendation on which programme fits, and an honest answer if none does.
How soon can we start, and how do I book a seat?
New batches start every week at most centres, and online batches start throughout the month. Submit the enquiry form on this page or message us on WhatsApp, and a counsellor will confirm your free assessment slot within 24 hours.
What do you need from us for the classes to work?
Attendance on all seven days, punctuality, and no cursive coaching at home during the week — well-meant parental correction between classes is the most common cause of mixed technique. Everything else is our responsibility.
Do you have a centre near me?
Write Right operates centres across India and also runs live online batches for learners without a nearby centre. Send us your city through the enquiry form and we will confirm the closest centre or place you in the next online batch.
